India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has pulled out of his much-anticipated stint with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, citing personal reasons. The 28-year-old was scheduled to play five red-ball games in the ongoing County Championship Division Two season but will no longer travel to England.
Yorkshire coach Anthony McGrath confirmed Ruturaj Gaikwad’s withdrawal just days ahead of their fixture against Surrey, which was to mark the batter’s debut.
“Unfortunately, Rutu’s not coming now for personal reasons,” McGrath said. “We hope that everything’s ok with him. He was due to come for five games, and obviously we’re up against time now to find someone else.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad Deal Signed, Then Shelved
Gaikwad had been signed last month to bolster Yorkshire’s top order for the remainder of the season. The India and Chennai Super Kings opener was expected to bring stability and international experience to a side currently in mid-table, with aspirations of climbing into contention.
The agreement included four County Championship games and potentially a few One-Day Cup matches. However, the India cricketer opted out at the last moment, leaving Yorkshire scrambling for a replacement.
Recent Injuries and Schedule
The Maharashtra right-hander had been recovering from a hairline fracture in his elbow, which ruled him out of the latter part of IPL 2025, where MS Dhoni returned to captain CSK. Though fit again, Gaikwad had not featured in any official matches for India A during their recent tour of England.
This would have been Gaikwad’s first stint in English domestic cricket—a valuable opportunity to face conditions unfamiliar to many subcontinental batters.
Yorkshire in a Tight Spot
Yorkshire had counted on Gaikwad’s availability for a crucial phase of their campaign, especially with their match against Surrey scheduled for July 22 at Scarborough. His absence now puts them under time pressure, with the coaching staff actively looking for a replacement.
McGrath hinted that it’s “very unlikely” they will be able to rope in a new overseas batter in time for the next game.
