Chennai, July 21, 2025 – In a dramatic political turn, Anwar Raja, the AIADMK’s organisational secretary and former Union MP, has been expelled from his party and officially joined the ruling DMK in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. His exit underscores mounting tensions over the AIADMK’s renewed alliance with the BJP.
Anwar Raja removal
Raja’s removal was announced by AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who stripped him of all positions and basic membership rights following Raja’s public visit to DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam.
Long critical of the AIADMK–BJP alliance, Raja warned that the BJP aims to “destroy any party it aligns with” and cautioned that it was undermining AIADMK’s appeal to minority voters.
Anwar Raja Statement after Joining

Addressing the media after joining the DMK, he stated: “I tried explaining a lot to save the party but they didn’t listen… Hence I joined DMK in the presence of Chief Minister Stalin,” reinforcing his belief that Stalin’s leadership enjoys strong popular trust.
Anwar Raja is no stranger to intra-party upheavals; he was previously expelled in November 2021 after criticizing AIADMK leadership, only to rejoin in August 2023 under EPS’s support.
A seasoned politician from Ramanathapuram, Raja held the MP seat from 2014–19 and previously served as Tamil Nadu’s Labour Minister (2001–06). His shift to the DMK marks yet another significant realignment amid the state’s simmering political rivalry between DMK and AIADMK.
